I've been away from Twitter and the blog for awhile. Lots on my mind and lots going in at work. I've been thinking about a lot of things regarding what might happen if people actually had school the way the research suggests and made the changes needed to move from the assembly line model of education to one that supports learning in the current age. My observation suggests that positive change is just rhetoric to mask the corporate agenda and the government's obvious first loyalty to the corporate/industrial model. This past couple of weeks as I have had to administer a number of assessments Taft were not directly connected to topics currently being covered in class and as I read about the ongoing search for number crunching-type assessment tools to group students and/or to rate teachers, it has become quite clear that the change that I look for and hope for may not be coming - at all or even in my life time, let alone while I am still working. This makes me wonder if I can work in this frustration and disappointment for much longer. Is there some other place where I belong? Can I exist where things are so different than what I feel is right? Questions that might not have an answer right now. I wish I knew what lay ahead and if I will ever fulfill my desire to make a difference.

I believe that teachers have the opportunity to inspire deep and meaningful learning and that all learners create their knowledge in ways that are connected to their interests and within their social context. I have observed many waves of educational "reform" come and go and remain hopeful that schools will be transformed into places where all learners desire to be creators and consumers of knowledge and that, together, each member of this community will become prepared to face their world in both skills and attitudes. |
